Yesterday, we act out one of the scene in Zoot suit, the part out group act was the “people’s lawyer”. I think it was fun, and everybody actually enjoyed it. My character is Tommy which is a young guy who’s always horsing around and being supportive to his friends. My preparation for this character is to try to act like a gangster and to memorize the conversations. And I think the hardest thing is to memorize the Spanish conversations and act like a real gangster at the same time. I think I can do it better if I have more reactions when the lawyer said we’ve been convicted to crime or when Henry and George were auguring. The strength of our performance was we have a good staging where the audients can see what the position is like in the book, so they can visualize in the mind. And I think the weaknesses of our group was we didn’t memorize the conversations really well, especially for David, he had the longest conversations ever it was pretty hard for him to memorize those. Most of the conversations were between him and the character Henry, and I think this is going to affect the fluency of our scene.
I think act out the scene actually help me a lot of better understanding the reading. If we are just reading the scene, then it would be boring. But since we are acting out the scene, we kind of put ourselves into the characters and the situation.
Overall, I like this activity. : )
